NLC shuts down Owerri (Imo State) over anti workers policies of the Imo State Government
13-Jan-2016

The Imo State government has, for some time now, been unleashing negative policies which are inimical to the welfare of workers in the employment of the state. Through some phony policy of concessioning, the State governor sought to carry out a mass lay-off of workers of parastatals in the state. The same governor continues to sit on the bail-out funds released to the state as workers are still being owed months of salaries. While the Congress had sought to engage the governor on these issues, he intensified the assault on workers yesterday by an announcement that all workers of the state who are above 45 years of age would be deemed to have retired from service. When the NLC State Council officials met with him to discuss this, he insisted that, in the alternative, salaries and pensions would be cut by 30 percent. Comrades, if this assault on workers in Imo State is not effectively resisted, these and similar obnoxious policies will spread to other states. There is, therefore, an urgent need for action. A solidarity rally has, therefore, been scheduled for Owerri on Wednesday, 13th January 2016, at 10.00am. All unions are expected, in the spirit of solidarity and in consonance with the principle of “injury to one, injury to all”, to mobilise their members in Imo and other adjoining states in the South East and South South to masivelly participate in the rally. All CWC members are also expected to attend. The starting point of the rally is the NLC Imo State Council Secretariat, No. 13 Edede Street, Owerri. Yours Comradely, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson General Secretary .
