BREAKING NEWS
The Chairperson of NLC Rivers State Council, Comrade Alex Agwanwor was on Thursday, December 4, 2025, arrested by officers from Alagbon Police. The arrest, according to an eye-witness account, took place at the premises of Congress sub-secrtariat at Olajuwon Street, Yaba, Lagos between 8:45 and 9pm shortly after the meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC).
The arrest, according to the eye-witness account, was not unconnected with disagreements within his union, NUPENG.
At the CWC meeting, the matter was discussed and it was resolved that a committee be set up to resolve it.
It is reason Congress is dismayed and outraged by this development.
The Congress is similarly at a loss as to why the police would be used to settle intra-union disputes or disagreements without giving Congress the opportunity to resolve them.
Congress is miffed by the conduct of the police, that is by way of executing an arrest in its premises without protocol.
Congress believes this is not only malicious in intent but violates all known civil protocols of arrest as well as constitutes a threat to the peaceful labour-police relations.
Accordingly, Congress demands for an immediate release of Comrade Alex Agwanwor as the resort to the use of police to settle internal disputes within the trade unions could hold dire consequences for the parties involved.
Further information will be communicated as events unfold.
Comrade Benson Upah
Acting General Secretary
